Artist of the Month of July 2014 is – ERIC YANG here’s a short interview with Eric , a must must read .. many congratulations Eric !!
- Tells us something about yourself as an individual and a photographer ? What gear do you personally use for streets ?
Hi, I am Eric from Taiwan, I enjoy travel and photographing. Nowadays I often spend around 3 hours a day study photographing magazines and street photographing. I also travel to other countries to shoot every 4 month, it allows me to be closer to local people and to be able to discover and understand their cultures. I only studied photographing for not longer than 2 years, but I know that the moment I have my hands on my first camera, it is and will always be my lifetime project. It seems like my destiny to be a street photographer, when I was young, I have always enjoyed exploring the streets; I had the opportunity to learn Hip-Hop and performing breaking dance or graffiti on the streets. It leads me to be who I am now, passionate about the streets. One of my favorite saying is that “From the street for the street”, streets are full of love and potential, this is why I have deeply fall in love with streets. As for streets, I prefer light geared cameras, this is because it allows me to hide myself, and it would not be awkward for people on the streets wondering that you might “attack” them (DSLR cameras can be scary sometimes), moreover a lighter gear is easier to carry around, especially for people like me who average 3 hours street shooting a day, thus by carrying a handy sized camera, I would not feel like that I am carrying heavy weighted dumbbells like I am doing weights trainings in the Gym. My favorite camera gear is Ricoh GR and GRD4, they are not just handy, the 28mm prime lens allows me to be more focused, but for night shooting, I prefer my Nikon DSLR for better quality photos.
- What’s your view and meaning of street photography ?
I love people, love to talk to different people from different places and get to know them; street photography allows me to focus my attention on people’s behaviors including their attitudes, actions, emotions, their way of living and facial expressions etc. What attracts me and interests me the most is how street photography provides met the opportunity to notify people with different backgrounds or culture would have reacted differently facing the same environment or matters. Furthermore, street photography provides me the opportunity to delivery my carryings to those ones who needed, allowing me to communicate with them or even grab a drink with them; through these, I see the warmth, beauty and love in this world.
- What do you think of color and black & white in streets ? which one is your stronger point ?
I am attracted to colors especially those bright colors. My favorite moment is when the bright coloring meets the dramatic nightfall, and when looking at the reflections of the neon lights on the billboard at night. The nights in Asia is always full of colorful neon lights and billboard, and one of my strong suit is let these colorful lights to be even more dazzling at night. I will use flash to spot my adorable protagonist, then slow the shutter speed allowing the neon light to streak across the sky like shooting stars. I believe it will create a romantic and yet charming atmosphere, allowing my work to be more passive and tense. Black & White is also my favorite, similar to most Asians I prefer Tai Chi, meditation and the color of black & white, the Black & White reflects to introversion and allowing people to discover the stories behind every photos. I will modify my photo whether color or black & while according to the nature of every photo and my state of mind while shooting the photo.
- What tips that you want to share with “street-o-graphy” group members on street photography ? What’s your favorite tip ..?
I love to share a few my favorite tips, 1. blind shot, this needs a bit of practice to get use to know your focusing point, and to find out the best comfort focus, 2. behind object, when you finish shooting, look straight behind the object that you were shooting at, most of the time that they would not realize that they were your targets 3. Appreciate the “target”, when you have done shooting, talk to the people who you were shooting at, tell them that you are a professional photographer and they have the potential and natural beauty which attracted me, it is a professional “bad habit” to capture every wonderful moments (it works every time). Then you can exchange email with them and email the photos to them later, it builds a fine relationship between photographer and local people on the streets.
- Anything about our group “Street-O-Graphy ( be as blunt as you wish ) – The best of streets from around the world” ?
I really love this group, there are a lot of my favorite works, it allows me to meet many other street photographers around the world, it is a great platform for all of us. I was wondering that I should invite Mr Pushkar Raj Sharma and Mr Huhammad Iman Hasan to travel with me, to shoot on the streets together and to discover different cultures and values on the streets.
- Which forum / website we find all of your work ?
I will always post my work on my Facebook page “Eric Yang Photography”, and on Flickr “https://www.flickr.com/photos/klattu520/”; and of course you can find me on “Street-O-Graphy – The best of streets from around the world”, you are welcome to pop by and say hi.
- Have street photography have affected your life on day-day in any manner ?
Street photography is part of my life, I love to walk on the streets and shoot. It is like my day-to-day dairy, to record and note down the importance moments around me whether visual or spiritual. I devote myself in those photos, by understanding photography I become to understand who I am and what I really want, and eventually it renews me.
